MP puts litterbugs on notice

NKULUMANE Member of Parliament (MP) Freedom Marechu

NKULUMANE Member of Parliament (MP) Freedom Marechu (Zanu PF) has warned residents against dumping litter illegally in the constituency.

Marechu, who is also the ruling party’s Bulawayo youth chairperson, said the constituency was an eyesore because of litterbugs as he cited the mushrooming of illegal dumpsites.

He said he witnessed two men using donkeys to dump waste in a water drainage channel.

“I immediately stopped this act, as Nkulumane is firmly committed to fighting environmental pollution and protecting our open drainage systems, especially in preparation for possible flooding,” he said.

The legislator described illegal dumping as a serious offence that threatens public health and safety.

“It blocks water flow, causes flash floods, spreads diseases, contaminates water sources and endangers the lives of our residents, particularly children and the elderly,” he said.

“A dirty environment is a threat to public health and undermines the dignity of our community.”

Marechu urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and warned that illegal dumping of waste will not be tolerated.

“I commend the city council for its efforts to track, identify and take action against individuals who engage in illegal dumping,” he said.

He stressed the importance of maintaining clear drainage systems, particularly during the rainy season, when blocked channels can cause flash floods and property damage.

“Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility.

“Everyone has a role to play in keeping Nkulumane safe, clean, and flood-free.”

Illegal dumping has been a recurring problem in urban areas, prompting local authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforcement.

Council officials have previously urged residents to report illegal dumping activities and to ensure waste is disposed of in designated areas.

Authorities warned that continued illegal dumping can result in legal action being taken against offenders.
