A GWERU woman and a 17-year-old girl who assaulted a 15-year-old Mkoba girl and later “buried” her alive at Matinunura Cemetery following a misunderstanding over a jacket and cellphone she owed one of them, yesterday escaped jail after being ordered to perform community service.

Family Shorai (20) and the 17-year-girl force-marched the juvenile to a pit before burying her to chest level.

The complainant was, however, rescued by a passer-by 30 minutes later and made a report to the police, leading to the arrest of the two.

It was the State’s case that on October 1 2013, the complainant, who stays in Antelope Park, was on her way to church when she met her attackers who dragged her to Matinunura Cemetery where they assaulted her over a jacket and cellphone she owed one of them.

They then forced her into a dug grave and buried her to chest level and left. A passer-by freed the girl.

Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire found the woman and the girl guilty of attempted murder and sentenced them to five years in prison, but suspended two years for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Another one year was suspended on condition each of the accused compensated the complainant $96 for medical expenses.

The remaining two years were suspended on condition the two completed 560 hours community each at Chikumbiro Primary School.
