THREE people were rescued and rushed to hospital after a fierce fire tore through a building next to Sai Mart at the intersection of Lobengula Street and 4th Avenue in Bulawayo on Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze, which sent smoke billowing into the sky, prompted a swift response from the City of Bulawayo Fire and Ambulance Service, which deployed four fire engines to the scene.
Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident, saying the brigade received an emergency call and arrived at the scene within minutes, only to find the building engulfed in flames.
“We had a huge fire next door to Sai Mart Lobengula Street. It was really bad,” Moyo said.
Firefighters immediately launched rescue operations as three people remained trapped inside the burning building.
He said the victims were successfully rescued by brigade crews and taken to hospital by the brigade ambulance for medical attention.
“Three persons who were trapped were rescued by the brigade crew and conveyed to hospital by the brigade ambulance,” Moyo added.
He said firefighters deployed four water jets to contain the blaze, while breathing apparatus teams worked on the ground to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

“Four jets were deployed strategically, with breathing apparatus teams on the ground.”
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault linked to refrigerators inside the building.
The extent of the damage is being assessed.
