BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) has pledged to ensure safety on all spaces in the city in its quest to promote a conducive working environment.

Speaking at the commemorations to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Friday acting town clerk, Dictor Khumalo said the local authority was prioritising safety at workspaces.

“The council (has been) working towards attaining the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 45001 certification since its adoption of occupational safety and health management systems in 2022.

“This is a world of work where there will be zero accidents, zero injuries and zero work-related illnesses as the council continues to strive to make these workspaces safe and healthy,” Khumalo said.

ISO 45001 is a standard of management systems for occupational health and safety, established in March 2018.

The goal of ISO 45001 is the reduction of occupational injuries and diseases, including promoting and protecting physical and mental health.

The National Social Security Authority’s occupational safety and health officer Absolom Zimuto implored organisations to avoid accidents in the world of work.

“In the world of work, we are saying a mistake can cost someone’s life, or your life. We need to be totally committed to creating a safe and healthy work environment,” Zimuto said.

“There should be a culture of doing things, a safe work environment is not one that is based on production without safety, but one where there should be safety with production. Safety first, and then we produce.”
