BEITBRIDGE District Hospital has reported three suspected cases of the dreaded cholera disease,

A source at Beitbridge Hospital said three people had tested positive for the disease.

“We have three positive cases,” the source said.

District medical officer Linus Samhere could not be reached for comment.

A Health ministry situational report released on Monday showed that the country had recorded 67 cases of the disease and no death has been recorded so far.

The cholera outbreak started last month, with two cases being recorded in Chegutu in Mashonaland West province.

The outbreak has since spread to other provinces.

Zimbabwe now has 18 hotspots, which include Beitbridge, Chegutu, Buhera, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza.

Between August 2008 and July 2009, Zimbabwe experienced a catastrophic cholera outbreak which ultimately resulted in 98 592 cases and 4 288 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation.
