PROMINENT politicians, businesmen and academics from the Midlands provincial capital, have submitted their curriculum vitaes (CVs) to contest for the Gweru Urban seat in Zanu PF primary elections scheduled for this weekend.

Six aspiring candidates including academics, businesspeople and ruling party district officials have shown interest in the constituency.

In the Midlands province, the Gweru Urban seat is one of the most desired seats.

Those contesting for the seat are Midlands State University (MSU) director for enterprises Alex Mukwembi, Zanu PF district co-ordinating committee spokesperson Victor Maride, Gweru brigade commander for National Youth Service Esau Natare, businessmen Elager Tinarwo, Zezai Makomo and Constain Makomo.

Although most of the candidates were not at liberty to comment on their candidature, pending the launch of campaigns by the ruling party, Maride has already posted in a Zanu PF Gweru media alert WhatsApp group that he will be vying for the seat.

“Just to let you know my brothers and sisters that l am an aspiring candidate for Gweru Urban constituency in 2023,” Maride said. “I thank you for all the support, prayers and encouragement.”

In a Zanu PF Gweru Urban WhatsApp group, supporters of the aspiring candidates last weekend began campaigning for their preferred representatives.

A campaign message by Zanu PF activist Ralph Piki read: “An intuitive think-tank with a heart of gold and a warriors soul, vote Doc Mukwembi.”

Some supporters said Natare, who lost in the 2018 parliamentary elections was “a tried and tested” candidate who should be given a second chance.
