Air Zimbabwe failed to take to the skies for the second day running yesterday as the situation at the cash-strapped airline remained bleak.

Highly-placed sources at the national airline said it was unlikely that there would be any flights today. “The situation remains bleak as pilots are still waiting for their April salaries and nobody knows when they will be processed,” said our source.

The chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Communication, Blessing Chebundo, said they were worried by the recent turn of events at the cash-strapped airline.

He said as parliamentarians, they should play an active role in the running of the affairs of the airline overseeing what happens at the parastatal, instead of waiting for the situation to get out of hand as it had already.

“The challenge we have had is that as a committee we have been tied up with the constitution-making exercise.

“We however hope to engage them (Air Zimbabwe) once Parliament is reconstituted,” said Chebundo. Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive officer Innocent Mavhunga’s mobile phone again went unanswered yesterday.
