THE holiday accident death toll shot to 143 by midday yesterday from the 134 fatalities recorded the previous day, police have confirmed.

“The number of people who have died in holiday accidents has risen to 143 and 788 people have been injured,” said police spokesperson Inspector Andrew Phiri.

He said police had recorded 872 accidents, issued 10 362 tickets for various traffic offences and impounded 824 unroadworthy vehicles.

The police spokesperson said they had also arrested 741 motorists for driving while speaking on cellphones.

Six members of the same family died on Christmas Eve when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in overturned in Chivhu.
