Bryn Langley of Falcon College in Esigodini won this year’s Under-18 Boys Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial Tennis Tournament after beating Friedlander Kadzombe of Gifford High School 6-4, 7-5 in the finals at Girls College yesterday.
The tournament is run by the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board in honour of the late Tarryn-Leigh De Souza who was a student at Girls College and she passed away in 2009 after succumbing to heart failure at the age of 24.
The Under-18 Girls category was won by Thembela Ndlovu of Dominican Convent who beat school-mate Natasha Mandewo 6-3, 6-2.
Wendy Rhudu of Kwekwe beat Tafadzwa Mawisire of Maranatha High 6-4, 6-1 to win the Under-16 Girls section, but there were no entrants for the Under-16 Boys age group.
The tight contest of the day was in the Under-14 Boys’ section where Mehluli Sibanda beat Hillary Ncube of St Columbus 6-4 before losing 2-6.
The third duel was even more spirited as Sibanda went on to edge Ncube 10-8 to win the Under-14 boys’ category of the competition.

Nikita Daka had an easy stroll in the park beating Fenny Chitengu 6-3, 6-0 in the Under-14 girls section.
Both girls are from Girls College.
Tanya Mangunje of Dominican Convent also had it easy in the girls’ Under-12 category with 6-3, 6-0 victory over Renata Zulu while Tanaka Chabata of Masiye Phambili overcame Bongani Sibanda 6-0, 7-5 in the same age section for the boys.
Although results for the Under-10 age groups, who played a round-robin format, could not be immediately established yesterday, Thabisile Dube of Dominican Convent came out tops in the girls’ section and her runner-up was Takudzwa Mawisire.
For the boys, Takunda Hore came position one followed by Collen Ndebele.
Adam Joelson, the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board chairman, yesterday said paid tribute to the De Souza family for sponsoring the tournament which is in its third year.
“The tournament ran smoothly and we had a good turnout. We had 120 participants and the bulk of the players were from the Under-14 girls section.
“We witnessed some competitive tennis and we would like to thank everyone who participated, the parents and most importantly the De Souza family, the sponsors of the tournament,” Joelson said.
