Zifa Northern Division One side ZRP Morris defender Nyasha Chakanyuka collapsed and died during the team’s morning training session at Morris Depot yesterday.

The league’s secretary-general Sweeney Mushonga confirmed Chakanyuka collapsed as the players were going through their warm-up routine.

“They were warming up in pairs and he told his colleague that he was having some chest pains and feeling dizzy, so he needed to sit down and rest a bit. He then collapsed moments later,” Mushonga said.

A post-mortem to determine the cause of the death will be carried out today. Funeral arrangements are also expected to be announced today.

The 27-year-old left behind a wife and three children.

“As Northern Region Division One, we are in shock following the sudden death of one of our own, a player who had a bright future and a lot to offer to our football,” Mushonga said.

“We mourn this loss and we will observe a minute of silence for all our matches at the weekend in his honour.”

The tragedy struck 11 months after another player, Eliah Munyaradzi, also collapsed and died during a Division Three league match in May last year.

Munyaradzi, who was a midfielder for Epworth-based Maguta FC, collapsed minutes after coming on as a substitute.

In 2002, Blue Swallows player Elisha Chikuni collapsed and died during a match after scoring a hat-trick in the team’s 5-1 thrashing of their opponents.

Former Caps United and Fire Batteries goalkeeper Elwyn Mushangazhike also collapsed during a match and later died.
