The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) will this evening host a fundraising dinner at the Rainbow Hotel for the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Youth Games team that will be travelling for the National Youth Games set for Gwanda next month.

The province needs $64 000 to send athletes to Gwanda, Matabeleland South, for the games that will run from August 14-21.

Bulawayo SRC co-ordinator Sam Dzvimbu yesterday confirmed the dinner.

“We are having a Business Networking and Fundraising Dinner tomorrow (today).

“We are aiming to raise funds to meet our budget, which is $64 000, for the Youth Games. We are hosting the dinner at Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel,” he said.

Dzvimbu said the event would be graced by the Bulawayo Province Governor Cain Mathema and leading businesspeople in the community and would also be used as the platform for business networking.

Also expected to lead the coterie of businesspeople in the fundraising venture is businessman and general manager of the Bulawayo Youth Games, Raj Modi.

A total of 194 athletes and technical officials from the city are expected to travel to Gwanda for this year’s edition of the games.

The athletes will participate in sporting disciplines which include netball, football, handball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and athletics.

Dzvimbu urged the community to assist and ensure that the province is able to send the athletes to Gwanda as a lot of money is needed for the upkeep for the athletes.

“We need about $10 000 in affiliation fees. Equipment will cost about $20 000 and we also need kits worth about $10 000. We need funds for accommodation as athletes needed to go into camp before the games as well as funds for transport,” he said.

The athletes go into camp at Founders High School on August 8 before they depart on August 13.
