TSHWANE — Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Surprise Moriri will compete with Zimbabwe international Esrom Nyandoro for the holding midfielder role at Chloorkop this season.

This was revealed by Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens after the MTN8 quarter-final win against Bloemfontein Celtic at Lucas Moripe Stadium at the weekend.

Moriri was deployed in an unfamiliar position in front of the Sundowns defence, but despite this, performed very well.

Long-serving midfielder Nyandoro sat on the bench, and the captain’s armband was passed on to Method Mwanjale, who also had a storming game for the Brazilians.

Speaking to KickOff.com after the game, Neeskens was full of praise for Moriri and said he will continue playing him in that position. “He played there during the pre-season and did well. I was happy again with his performance on Saturday and he will compete for the same position with Nyandoro this season.”

The Dutch coach also revealed that midfielder Lionel Mutizwa will undergo a scan on August 12 to determine the severity of his injury. Sundowns is home to two other Zimbabwe internationals in strikers Nyasha Mushekwi and Simba Sithole, who is in Harare for tonight’s international friendly against Zambia at Rufaro Stadium.
