Five-a-side football (Futsal) in Zimbabwe is set for a major boost after 30 coaches and referees from all the country’s provinces descended on the capital for the first-ever Futsal workshop in coaching and refereeing.

The five-day workshop, which was officially launched at Rufaro Stadium yesterday, is being conducted by Fifa Futsal instructors Asselam Khan from Mozambique and Mico Martic from Croatia.

Khan and Martic have been conducting similar workshops in other countries in the region and the world.

The workshop is being organised by the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) in partnership with the world soccer governing body, Fifa.

Joseph Mabhonzo, the National Five-a- side Soccer League chairman told NewsDay Sport the two courses would go a long way in developing the sport in the country.

“We are very excited Zifa, in collaboration with Fifa, has hosted these workshops for our referees and coaches.

I must emphasise that this is the first time such courses have been held in Zimbabwe and I’m confident this will go a long way in developing the sport of Futsal.

“Gone are the days when we used to have referees and coaches who were not properly trained to conduct their duties.

We have referees and coaches from all the country’s provinces and we are confident after the workshop they will go back and share the knowledge they would have acquired with their colleagues in their various provinces,” said Mabhonzo.
