TRINIDAD & TOBAGO — Former West Indies batsman Runako Morton has been killed in a car accident in Trinidad and Tobago, according to reports.
The vehicle in which Morton was travelling lost control and struck a pole, killing him on the spot. Morton, who was 33, played 15 Test matches, 56 one-day internationals (ODI) and seven Twenty20s (T20) for West Indies.
The batsman made his ODI debut in 2002 and his Test debut three years later. His final appearance for West Indies was in February 2010, in a T20 against Australia in Sydney.
Morton also represented Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands and Nevis in a first-class career spanning nearly 17 years, with the batsman scoring 5 980 runs at an average of 39,60.
Chris Gayle, who was the captain of West Indies in the last T20 and ODI that Morton played, expressed his condolences on Twitter.
“We lost a True Warrior WI Cricketer Runako Morton-May is soul rest in peace! Our memories together live on. My Condolences to his family,” Gayle tweeted.
