MANICA Diamonds have appointed Zanu PF deputy youth national commissar Taurai Kandishaya as the club’s new secretary-general as part of a wider restructuring exercise at the Mutare-based side.

The club confirmed the appointment in a statement yesterday.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Taurai Kandishaya as the new secretary general of Manica Diamonds.

“He brings dedication and leadership to the growth and success of the club. We welcome him to this important role and look forward to his contribution in strengthening the administration and continued progress of Manica Diamonds,” the statement read.

The club also announced the appointment of Tinashe Chipunza as the new chairman, with former chairman Masimba Chihowa taking up the deputy chairmanship.

Club benefactor Evans Kamombo said the changes were aimed at strengthening the club’s governance structures.

“These strategic changes, which take effect immediately, are designed to strengthen the club’s governance framework,” Kamombo said.

Manica Diamonds endured a difficult start to the Premier Soccer League season, going 10 matches without a win amid financial challenges.

The club’s struggles coincided with the withdrawal of support by the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company before African Mineral Ventures briefly took over sponsorship duties.

Stability has since returned following the takeover of operational control by Agrum Investment.

The Mutare side currently sits 15th on the 18-team league table with nine points from 13 matches ahead of Sunday’s high-profile clash against Highlanders FC at Sakubva Stadium.

Manica Diamonds are unbeaten in their last three matches, having recorded two wins and a draw as they seek to move away from the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has pledged to pay for the first 1 000 fans attending Sunday’s match.

Speaking in Harare yesterday while congratulating Kamombo for acquiring the Manica Diamonds franchise, Muchinguri-Kashiri praised the businessman for investing in football and giving back to the community.

“I want to congratulate my child and comrade Evans Kamombo for acquiring Manica Diamonds. More of our young people should venture into business and give back to society,” she said.

She added that her gesture was in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call for local empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Thousands of fans are expected to attend the match at Sakubva Stadium.
