When the country’s largest diamond producer by volume announced it would sponsor a newly promoted Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, thousands of fans in Manicaland and beyond welcomed the news with optimism. Manica Diamonds FC — popularly known as the Gem Boys — had earned promotion to the top flight after an unbeaten Division One campaign, raising expectations for an exciting debut season in elite football. For both players and supporters, the arrival of sponsor Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) signalled more than financial backing. It represented a commitment to youth empowerment, employment creation, and sports development in the province. Over the years, the partnership became a platform for nurturing local talent, with players such as Fortune “Binzi 99” Binzi emerging as beneficiaries of the club’s development pathway. Stable sponsorship also helped improve player welfare and professional structures within the team. Established in 2017, Manica Diamonds entered Division One in 2018 and secured promotion after dominating the Eastern Region league. “The club is owned by members, and ZCDC respects the decision by members to sell the franchise instead of seeking a new owner. As ZCDC, we took the Gem Boys as one of our key corporate social investment projects, and we have been the sponsor since then up until now. Our era has come to an end,” ZCDC said. “Our partnership with Manica Diamonds was a successful journey, and we are proud of the successes we achieved together. We are proud to have sponsored a new generation of Young Gems by offering them opportunities that have and will continue to change their livelihoods. Going forward, we wish the Gem Boys the best of success.” Manica Diamonds’ early years in the PSL were marked by strong performances and promise. Despite being newcomers, the club finished in the top four in its debut season and remained competitive in subsequent campaigns. With ZCDC’s exit, a chapter closes on a sponsorship that has supported the club since its formation in 2017.
