LONDON — Despite South African Premiership football club SuperSport United’s reported interest in him, Benjani Mwaruwari was spotted at English third-tier side Portsmouth training yesterday.

The Zimbabwean was photographed being put through his paces at Eastleigh. However, according to portsmouth.co.uk, he is just keeping fit at the club.

Although he was originally linked to South African clubs Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and his former club Jomo Cosmos, Benjani had been training at SuperSport on and off since September, and was close to putting pen to paper on a number of occasions.

SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt said at the end of October that despite being highly impressed with Mwaruwari at training, the club could not afford his salary.

However, the player said: “To be honest, I didn’t ask for much money from SuperSport, maybe I didn’t sign for a reason I don’t know.”

Mwaruwari, who moved from his native Zimbabwe to South Africa to join Jomo Cosmos in 1999, added: “I will keep waiting for offers because it is still my desire to end my soccer career on a high in South Africa, as it is like my homeland with my wife and kids here in the country.”
