THERE is no light in sight for the Zimbabwe women’s cricket team’s woes after they were bowled out for a measly 29 runs to lose the first Twenty20 match at the Harare Country Club by a massive 125 runs against the South Africa women’s emerging cricket squad yesterday.

Zimbabwe had gone into the first of the two Twenty20 matches hoping for a better performance after being comprehensively outplayed in the two-match one-day international series.

However, there was no respite for the hosts as the South Africans cruised to another comprehensive win. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat before aggressive opening batter Dané van Niekerk smashed 68 runs off just 49 deliveries to steer her team to a competitive 154 for two in their allotted 20 overs.

Zimbabwe’s reply never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals with none of their batters reaching double figures.

Opener Ashley Ndiraya top-scored for Zimbabwe with seven runs, while team captain Ashley Burdett managed four runs. The two countries will meet in the final Twenty20 match at the same venue today.
