The Rowland Park Open, which will be contested by over 72 holes of strokeplay, will be the last tournament in the qualifying tournaments for the inaugural edition of the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Championship.

Unveiled in November last year, the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Championships will be held in the Namibian capital late next month with amateur golfers from the host country, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Zambia expected to take part.

Leading amateur golfer Clive Nguru currently leads the rankings in the A Division ahead of Stuart Krogg and Christain Mbanga after the first three events of the qualifying tournaments

Four Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Championships qualifying tournaments have been played throughout the country since its launch in November 2013.

The first tournament was the Leopard Rock Open at Leopard Rock, followed by the Hwange Open which had the largest field of 122 players.

Next in line was the Mawegu Amateur played in March in Kadoma as well as the Dugmore played in Bulawayo.

Brian Maphosa, the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Championships liaison person, said the circuit had achieved one of its goals to make the tournament as national in character as possible.

“The tournament has been played in such far-stretched places as Hwange, Leopard Rock and Zvishavane. Being the first such tournament, there has been a lot of learning.

“After the tournament in Zvishavane and the finals in Windhoek, we will restrategise to enhance the profile of the tournament,” said Maphosa.

“We expect much more active participation in the new round of the tournament.”
