Sport, Arts and Culture minister Andrew Langa is expected to set the ball rolling for this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be hosted by Manicaland province in August at the official launch of the games in Mutare tomorrow.

The 13th edition of the annual games will be held in the eastern border town from August 15 to 23.

In an interview with NewsDay Sport, Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) provincial coordinator for Manicaland Shupikai Berejena said the event would also be used to fundraise ahead of the games.

“We are going to launch our National Youth Games tomorrow. We have lined up a number of activities and we are going to use the event to fundraise ahead of the games,” he said.

“Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa will be the guest of honour while our patron for the games, Mandi Chimene (Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister), will attend the games with other senior government officials.

“Our budget to host the games has ballooned to about $1,5 million. We still have a long way to go to host the games and we need to work hard to raise the required money.”

The last edition of the youth games was hosted by Masvingo with Harare dominating after collecting 40 medals.

Masvingo came second on the medals table with 35 medals while Manicaland came sixth amassing eight medals.
