SEVEN people died in a Zupco bus accident that occurred just outside Kwekwe yesterday afternoon.
Witnesses at Truckers Inn, where the accident occurred, told NewsDay that a Honda Fit encroached into the lane of a Harare-bound bus.
“The driver of the bus swerved to the left and lost control. He then hit two commuter omnibuses which were parked on the roadside. The Honda Fit also swerved off the road and landed in a ditch,” a witness Nomore Gwatirisa said.
Police officers and military personnel from 5 Brigade assisted the victims who were trapped in the bus.
The injured and deceased were ferried to Kwekwe General Hospital.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi last night said the accident claimed seven lives; four from the Zupco bus and three from the Honda Fit.
At a roadside Press briefing, police officer commanding Kwekwe district, Chief Superintendant Conrad Mubaiwa said: “We are saddened by the road traffic accident, but we are still looking for the facts and collating the information. At this stage we are unable to give full details of this accident,” Mubaiwa said.
Nomore Mabasa of Unit K in Chitungwiza who was travelling to Harare said the bus was smoking and the driver failed to apply emergency brakes because of a suspected mechanical fault.
