The MDC led by Welshman Ncube is considering boycotting the Independence Day celebrations in protest over Friday’s the arrest of National Healing and Reconciliation co-minister, Moses-Mzila Ndlovu and the crackdown on worshipers.
Mzila Ndlovu, who has been addressing meetings on national healing and reconciliation, was arrested while on his way to Victoria Falls where he was scheduled to address another meeting.
MDC deputy spokesman, Kurauone Chihwayi said Mzila Ndlovu’s arrest and the recent crackdown on clergyman and worshipers was evidence that the country had not yet achieved true Independence.
“Consultations are going on, and indications are that we will not take part in the Independence celebrations on Monday. We have nothing to celebrate when Ministers are arrested while on duty and prayer meetings are disrupted,” said Chihwayi.
“We respect the Independence Day and the sacrifice that Zimbabweans made to liberate this country, but there can be no true independence when the State machinery, such as the police is used to crush civilians. Zimbabweans are being denied freedom of worship. They are being denied freedom of association and freedom of speech.
Chihwayi said Mzila-Ndlovu’s arrest was testimony that Zanu PF was not committed t the GPA and had no respect of the Southern Africa Development Community, the guarantors of the agreement.
