PRINCIPALS to the Global Political Agreement (GPA) yesterday condemned the utterances by Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa threatening a coup if Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai wins the forthcoming elections.

Chinamasa, who is also Zanu PF GPA negotiator, told British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) last week that a Tsvangirai victory would not be accepted by Zanu PF and the military. He said the MDC-T leader was an agent of the West and his victory would be Western sponsored and, therefore, unacceptable.
He accused Tsvangirai of planning to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle and said he would be inviting trouble, warning the army would not sit back.
Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka yesterday said Tsvangirai raised concerns over Chinamasa’s apparent coup threats to President Robert Mugabe at the principals’ weekly meeting and said the two leaders agreed the utterances where in bad taste.
“The Principals agreed that minister Chinamasa’s statements were not in the best interest of the country,” Tamborinyoka said.

“They agreed that the statements were not in the spirit of democracy and mocks all the efforts the principals have been making towards reform,” he added.
Tamborinyoka said the leaders also agreed that the constitution should be completed as soon as possible and parties should expedite the implementation of agreed reforms.
