A SENIOR police officer is reported to have rallied other police offices to campaign for Zanu PF and ensure President Robert Mugabe secures outright victory in the forthcoming elections. Report by Everson Mushava Chief Reporter

Police Assistant Commissioner responsible for operations in the Police Protection Unit (PPU), Alfios Mpofu, is said to have urged police officers to campaign for Mugabe, saying Zimbabwe could not be run by puppets of the West, in apparent reference to Mugabe’s nemesis, MDC-T leader Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

Asked for a comment, Assistant Commissioner Mpofu admitted he had a meeting with police commanders on that day, but denied that he made any political utterances.

“It was not a rally,” Mpofu said. “I had a meeting with commanders and it was basically about preparations for the festive season. I was just advising them to be alert. I do not talk on things like politics. It is not good.”

Mpofu is reported to have said these remarks while addressing PPU officers in a chapel at Tomlinson Depot on December 11.

“He said it was the police officers’ mandate to ensure that Zanu PF wins at all cost. He said the police should never allow the country to be run by puppets of the West,” said the source.
