MDC yesterday closed submission of nomination papers for party members seeking to contest in the primary elections amid reports that several female members and youths had submitted their CVs for consideration.

MDC national spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube, who is also a member of the Welshman Ncube-led party’s national election directorate, said primary elections will be held in two weeks.
Bulawayo MDC spokesperson Edwin Ndlovu said nomination papers from Bulawayo and other provinces would be sent to the party’s national election directorate for verification.
“If there are more candidates for the constituencies and if they do not reach consensus, primary elections would be conducted,” he said. “Primary elections would be held in two weeks after the nomination papers are submitted to the election directorate.”
Party sources said several female members and youths had submitted their names, setting the stage for a bruising fight in primary elections.

Qhubani Moyo, a director of policy and research in the MDC, said he had submitted nomination papers to represent the party in the Bulawayo Central constituency.
“MDC is a democratic party which provides opportunity for everyone, men and women, to participate in nominations,” he said. “Applications are still open and anyone is allowed to submit.”
