MUTARE — Former Zimbabwean Ambassador to Cuba John Mvundura has won the Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairmanship.

Announcing the election results on Saturday, Zanu PF secretary for legal affairs Emmerson Mnangagwa said Mvundura polled 18 445 votes while his rival former Deputy minister of Labour and Social Welfare Monica Mutsvangwa got 7 170 votes.
Joyline Chipo Porusingazi triumphed over former Women’s League provincial boss Clara Mukahanana with 5 721 against 3 941 to claim the women’s league post.
Speaking after the elections, Mvundura promised to improve the image of the party in Manicaland.
“We should all try to work in peace. When I came here, we had only six seats, but now we have 22 out of 26,” Mvundura said.

In other provinces, Zanu PF provincial elections have been marred by chaos, allegations of rigging and vote buying.
Mvundura was seconded to lead Mutare after the incumbent Mike Madiro was suspended over allegations of stealing President Robert Mugabe’s birthday cattle.Madiro was, however, later acquitted of the charges with the courts saying the matter should be resolved at party level.
