TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Tyra Muropa on Friday night shrugged off stiff competition from a bevy of 10 other beautiful Utakataka female fans to be crowned Miss Utakataka Express at the second edition of the pageant held at City Sports Bar in Harare.

The pageant was open to professional models and fans of sungura musician, Peter Moyo, as its main objective is to honour his female fans for their loyalty to the Utakataka brand. Speaking to NewsDay after her crowning moment, overwhelmed Muropa, who was crowned the first princess at the inaugural edition of the pageant, said it was a result of hard work that she emerged the queen.
“After failing to make it last year, I worked hard and I am glad this year I have made it. I want to thank my family, friends and pageant organisers for their support,” she said. Vimbai Mungofa (20) and Natasha Basopa (20) were crowned first and second princess, respectively.
The first segment of the pageant saw the models taking to the ramp dressed in black and white outfits, while in the second and third segments, they were dressed in summer and evening wear, respectively.

After the pageant, revellers were entertained by Moyo and Utakataka Express, who brought the house down as they played sing-along hits like Naye, Mushonga Mukuru, Mira Newako, Pasirino and Mwari Wenyasha, which kept revellers on their feet throughout the performance. Young Igwe, as the musician is fondly known, said it was encouraging that fans continue to support the Utakataka brand.
“We thank our fans and the promoters for their tremendous support that has seen us doing better on this competitive showbiz scene,” Moyo said.
Music promoter, Biggie Chinoperekwei, who sponsored the pageant through Devine Assignments, promised a bigger and improved pageant next year.
“As a way of showing our support towards local musicians with our involvement in funding Miss Utakataka Express, next year the pageant will be carrying an improved prize package,” he said.
