RAPPER, Stunner capped an otherwise forgettable year after he was ordered to do community service by a local court in October this year for negligent driving, with an award, after being adjudged finest rapper alongside Junior Brown at the Hip Hop Awards held on Thursday night.

The awards gala was held at Club 1+1 at Longcheng Plaza in Harare.

It was, however, a heartbreak night for Bulawayo rapper Cal_vin who, despite recording seven nominations in several categories, walked away empty-handed.

Last year, he dominated the awards event with three accolades and a sterling performance.

Junior Brown shrugged off stiff competition from 8L, Takura, Gze and Brian G to win the best song of the year gong with his hit track Tongogara.

The Tongogara hitmaker also walked away with the Best Hustle of Year Award, which is evident to his corporate endorsement deals with Chibuku, TelOne and PSI.

Speaking at the sidelines of the ceremony, Junior Brown said hard work was the secret to success.

“It’s all in hard work and having the right team on your side. We really worked hard this year and it paid off. Fans should brace themselves for more next year,” he said.

Stunner walked home with best video, people’s choice and best dressed artiste for the night.

“I am the best and if there is anyone who disputes this, come to the stage to settle this matter through music or a fistfight. We grew up in the ghetto and are not afraid of anyone. Come and let’s fight,” the rapper taunted.

Cal_vin was magnanimous in defeat, saying: “Unfortunately, we didn’t win a single award this year. I guess we were not good enough for the game this year. However, we stay in our lane and congratulations to all the winners.”

Other winners included TiGonz (Best Male Artiste), Sharky (Best Album), AWA (Best Female Artiste), Takura (Best Newcomer) and 8L featuring Tocky Vibes — Mainini remix (Best Collaboration).

Takura entertained fans with a top drawer act, performing his hit songs Zino Irema, MaObama and Mungandidii.
