Gweru City Council-run Mtapa Clinic, has reopened its maternity ward, closed three years ago to pave way for renovations.

The development is set to ease pressure on expectant mothers from Mambo, Mtapa and Ascot suburbs, who were being forced to travel long distances to other health institutions in the city.
Last year, there were reports that some women from the three suburbs had resorted to home deliveries as there were no maternity facilities in the area.
Town clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza, said the maternity wing will be officially opened tomorrow.
“We expect the Local Government minister [Saviour Kasukuwere] to come here Tuesday (tomorrow) to officially open Mtapa Clinic maternity wing as well as Mkoba North administration offices,” she said.

The clinic’s maternity wing was closed in 2014 to pave way for renovations to the ceiling, floors, walls and infection standardisation control systems.
Mkoba 13 Polyclinic was the only health centre run by the municipality with maternity services after the closure of Mkoba 1 Clinic which had also been closed because of a depleted resource base.
