Cash-strapped Gweru City Council requires $10 million to address water supply challenges faced by the city, a senior council official has said.

Town Clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza, said the local authority requires new water pumps and a new water treatment plant.
She indicated that the financially crippled municipality would have to fork out at least $500 000 for each pump, a situation she said makes the whole project expensive.
The municipality requires six pumps, but operates with only two, a situation, which affects pumping capacity. “We require $10 million to address water supply issues, but in the short run we would need about $1,6 million, “Gwatipedza said.
“We also need a new water treatment plant that pumps at least 150 mega litres from the current 60 mega litres if we are to adequately address the city’s water requirements.”

Last year, the city had one of its water pumps’ parts stolen after it had gone for repairs in Kwekwe and it is still to be replaced.
Over the years, Gweru has been facing water shortages as a result of ageing pumps.
