BULAWAYO musician and dancer Sandra Ndebele has urged women to take ownership of their bodies and dress according to their taste as a form of expression without fear. BY SHARON SIBINDI

Sandy, as Ndebele is popularly known, said she had on several occasions been victimised for choosing to wear skimpy outfits.

“This has been not an easy road for me,” she told NewsDay. “People would judge me based on my dressing, but I was never moved at all. I would wear beads and skimpy dresses and they complained.”

Sandy described her stage costume as cultural and expressed surprise that the same people who judged her had no problem with watching Beyoncé wearing bum-shots and a bra on stage. She said she had been vilified for her energetic dances when she was simply promoting her culture.

“The media victimised me big time, as most of their stories were not true, like why am I dancing this way? But I said I am only a cultural Zimbabwean who is promoting her culture,” she said.

Sandy, who has performed in several countries, has released seven albums.
