POLICE in Gokwe are battling an increase in stray livestock such as cattle, goats and donkeys that have congested its station at Manoti.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said the police will dispose of the stray livestock through an auction after some of the beasts had been held for over three months.
Police are allowed by the law to sell off stray livestock that has been in holding for over three months if ownership cannot be established and there are no cases of stocktheft.
“Some livestock such as cattle have different brand marks, a scenario that made it difficult to auction them earlier because the police assume that owners could claim them,” he said.
“We appreciate the assistance we are getting from the community who assist us in keeping such livestock, a clear testimony that there is always a good relationship between communities and the police.”

He appealed to members of the public who may be searching for their livestock to approach Gokwe or Manoti police stations.
The livestock to be auctioned had been recorded as found property between February to September 2018. The auction will be carried out in conjunction with Gokwe South Rural District Council.
