POLICE in Plumtree, Matabeleland South, on Tuesday summoned more Zapu leaders on charges of holding an unsanctioned demonstration at the Catholic-run St Anne’s Brunapeg Hospital recently.
Zapu mobilised villagers to protest the alleged questionable recruitment of trainee nurses at the institution, claiming that locals were being overlooked despite having the necessary qualifications.
A number of villagers and Zapu activists were detained overnight at Plumtree Police Station following the protest, but were released after signing warned and cautioned statements.
The Southern Eye heard that police on Tuesday summoned Zapu national organising secretary John Dlamini, Matabeleland South provincial chairperson Matthew Bhubesi Sibanda and southern region spokesperson Patrick Ndlovu and charged them for allegedly organising the demonstration that caused the temporary closure of the hospital.
Police indicated that they would proceed with the case by way of summons. Ndlovu confirmed their arrest.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele referred Southern Eye to national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi for comment.
Nyathi said he could not comment as he was attending a workshop.
The incident comes less than a month after the opposition party and civic society activists in Bulawayo stormed Mpilo and United Bulawayo hospitals to protest against the same issue.
