The late deputy director-general of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and former member of the Zimbabwe National Liberation Army (Zanla) general staff, Menard Livingstone Muzariri (56), has been declared a national hero.
Muzariri, who died on Monday after a short illness, will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Thursday.
Rugare Gumbo, the Zanu PF spokesperson, said the decision to confer Muzariri national hero status was unanimous.
“The politburo unanimously agreed to declare him a national hero,” Gumbo said.
“There was a Cabinet meeting so politburo members had a round-robin asking each member what they thought and we all agreed that he was a national hero.”
President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday addressed mourners at the Muzariri residence in Harare urging Zimbabweans to unite and shun violence.

He said Zimbabweans should desist from using violence as a tool to get political posts, saying individuals seeking to be voted into office should do so peacefully.
President Mugabe paid tribute to the role played by Muzariri during the war of liberation.
Muzariri is survived by his wife, Esther Chiremba, and five children.
Mourners are gathered at number 27 Ross Road, Borrowdale, Harare.
