Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has embarked on a programme to rebuild and expand its clinic to accommodate the increased number of students following the upgrading of the institution from a teachers’ training college to a university.
The institution’s intake shot up 10 times from 450 to 4 500 students following its upgrading to a university.
The expansion project is expected to cost $120 000.
On completion, the clinic is expected to serve more than 4 500 students, the institution’s staff as well as members of the surrounding community. Currently, the clinic only caters for about 450 students.
CUT spokesperson, Musekiwa Tapera, said the recent sharp rise in student enrolment had necessitated the expansion.
Prior to the expansion, the clinic experienced shortage of space for observation wards, consultation rooms, offices and for storage of drugs. Dean of students, Gordon Dzoro, said after expansion of the clinic the university would then focus on acquiring an ambulance.

“Equipping the clinic might not be that easy so we are looking for donors to help us procure equipment for the clinic once it is completed,” said Dzoro.
