A 60-year-old man was this week sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for attempting to rape an eight-year-old girl.

Mutare regional magistrate Livingstone Chipadze jailed Eliah Zambuko of Magodhlo village in Chief Zimunya after convicting him on his own plea.

He admitted he attempted to rape the juvenile on his way from a beer drinking binge. Presenting the State case prosecutor Malvern Musarurwa said at around 4pm last Wednesday, Zambuko saw the juvenile fetching water for bathing near a garden and approached her.

He suddenly grabbed the minor by the waist and dragged her outside the garden to a secluded place.

However, the old man ran out of luck when villagers rushed to the scene after hearing the juvenile scream. When Zambuko saw the villagers coming he hastily let go of the minor and took to his heels.

A police report was made, leading to Zambuko’s arrest. He admitted the charge, but blamed his actions on alcohol.
