The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat), the country’s main enumerating body, has embarked on a statistical compilation exercise to enhance transparency and accountability of policy making in the country.
Zimstat director-general Moffat Nyoni said the statistics compilation would involve analysis of complex socio-economic issues.
“Statistics on poverty, income, national accounts, external trade, consumption, expenditure, industrial production, international comparison of prices and business tendency would be sought. There is a need for industries and individuals to cooperate by providing information they would acquire,” he said.
Nyoni said for the government and private sectors to achieve their aspirations, there was need for mutual aid and investment on statistical data which would delineate the impact of resources and thereby influence policy formulation.
“When information has been gathered, statistics on environment, labour force monitoring, agriculture and livestock, rent and domestic workers, demographic health, population and census mapping would be prioritised in the surveys to ensure that statistics encompass all health, environment and housing practicalities.
“Without these statistics, information for evidence-based policy and decision-making remain scarce to the State, institutions, and citizens,” he said.
