Veteran musician Cephas “Moto Muzhinji” Mashakada, who died of diabetic complications and kidney failure on Tuesday at Chitungwiza General Hospital, was buried in Chinhoyi on Friday.
Among the mourners were Mashonaland West governor Faber Chidarikire and Zanu PF acting Mashonaland West provincial chairman Reuben Marumahoko and Chitungwiza Hospital chief executive Obadiah Moyo.
“Cephas was a true hero, who always took part in, and was a member of the Chitungwiza Hospital Fundraising Committee, in order to help others,” Moyo said.
He said in September, they will organise a gala in the dormitory town to celebrate Mashakada’s life. Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu, who was by Mashakada’s side alongside the musician’s wife throughout his hospitalisation, said Mashakada’s illustrious career was worth celebrating.
“We mourn Mashakada’s passing on today yet we also celebrate his illustrious career and his immense contribution to the growth of the music industry both in terms of content and diversity of genre,” said Shamu.
Shamu said accomplished musicians should take a leaf from Mashakada’s life and emulate his spirit which he demonstrated by providing mentorship to several young and upcoming musicians.

He said the late Mashakada was always ready to play his part in community development and at national level when he participated at several music galas and festivals.
“I would like to appeal to all members of the music industry and orgnaisations working with musicians and the public and private sectors to seek ways of improving the welfare of our musicians,” he said.
