The seven students who were arrested on Wednesday at the Harare Magistrates Court while celebrating the lighter sentence given to University of Zimbabwe law lecturer Munyaradzi Gwisai and five others are set to appear in court today.
The seven Pride Mukona, Tryvinne Musokeri, Cozerte Chiringa, Tinashe Chisaira, Tinashe Muchikasa, Joram Chikwadze and Frank Mufambi are facing charges of disorderly conduct in a public place. Last night they were still being held at Harare Central Police Station.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said: They are in detention and are going to court tomorrow. The court is a public place and when they started singing, other courts were still in session and hence they were disturbing them.
The police asked them to go away, but they refused and kept on singing which is why they were arrested.
Their lawyer Obey Shava was making frantic efforts to secure their release. The students were arrested soon after Gwisai and five others were fined $500 each and ordered to perform 420 hours of community service.
Gwisai, Antonette Choto, Tatenda Mombeyarara, Edson Chakuma, Hopewell Gumbo and Welcome Zimuto were convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit public violence.
