MUTARE — Suspended City of Mutare mayor Brian James yesterday walked out of a disciplinary hearing that was being conducted by a probe team sent by Local Government, Rural and Urban Development minist Ignatius Chombo.
James’ lawyers from Henning Lock Legal Practitioners said the mayor was challenging his suspension through the High Court and it would be improper for him to appear before the committee as the case was sub judice.
In a letter addressed to Chombo, the lawyers said: “You are aware that this matter is currently pending before the High Court of Zimbabwe at Harare and Case Number HC 3875/12 refers the matter has not been concluded and will soon be set down for hearing.”
Blessing Nyamaropa, one of James’ lawyers, said the hearing proceeded without them and they did not know the outcome.
“The hearing proceeded in the absence of our client and we will bring this to the attention of the High Court and his rights will be fully reserved,” said Nyamaropa.
James was suspended from being Mutare mayor and councillor for Mutare Ward 12 in January this year over allegations which included corruption and misconduct.
