The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) presenter, Petroc Trelawny, who was arrested in Bulawayo last Thursday over allegations of practising without a work permit was set free on Monday after the Attorney General’s office declined to prosecute him.
But Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Lawyer, Lizwe Jamela yesterday said Trelawny was still being treated at a Bulawayo hospital after he fractured his arm while in detention.
Jamela confirmed that the AG’s office had declined to prosecute him, but no reasons were cited for granting him freedom without taking him to the courts.
“The prosecution has declined to prosecute him. He is now free although he is still admitted at the hospital to nurse the injuries he sustained while in detention,” he said.
The state could not reveal the reasons for dropping the charges against him.
Trelawny was arrested at an arts festival in Bulawayo and charged with working without a permit.
