Matabeleland South MDC-T youth chairperson Morgan Ncube yesterday handed himself to police in Plumtree following reports that they were keen to interview him for allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe during a campaign rally over the weekend.
The party’s provincial youth spokesperson, Bulletsi Nyathi, told NewsDay Ncube turned himself in the morning. He is set to appear at Plumtree Magistrates’ Court today on charges of denigrating Mugabe.
“We had a rally on Saturday at our provincial organising secretary Solani Moyo’s homestead,” Nyathi said.
“His homestead was burnt down in 2002, so the occasion was to officially open the homestead which has since been rebuilt. Ncube was one of the speakers and after the rally we heard that police were after him.”
Meanwhile, another senior MDC-T official in Bulilima West, Herbert Nkomo, was detained on Tuesday night for allegedly addressing an illegal gathering.
Nyathi said Nkomo, the Bulilima West district chairman and a member of an apostolic church, made an announcement concerning a rally at Moyo’s homestead during a church service. Police said the gathering was illegal. Nkomo was released yesterday.
