Two members of the Sobukazi school development committee (SDC) in Bulawayo recently landed themselves in trouble after they allegedly embezzled $20 000 reserved for teachers’ incentives.

Kamanga Dzingai (treasurer) and Abednico Chiweshe Sibanda (committee member) denied the charges when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmoere Mushove on Tuesday.

The court remanded the pair to July 10 on free bail.

The court heard that the two were signatories to the school’s bank account.

It is the State case that sometime between October 1, 2010 and March 1, 2011, the two authorised the withdrawal of $19 709,35 from the school’s bank account under the pretext that the money was meant to pay teachers’ incentives and the SDC employees.

They allegedly later converted the money to their own use.

The pair allegedly tampered with the statements showing the school’s income and expenditure records to cover up the scam.

However, the alleged anomaly was discovered by the school administration and other SDC members who reported the matter to the police, leading to the pair’s arrest.
