Plumtree Town Council has identified a new dumpsite and set aside a piece of land for quarry mining operations in a bid to curb environmental degradation in the border town.

In a statement released yesterday, town secretary Davis Luthe said the two projects were being carried out in line with the requirements of the Environmental Management Agency (EMA). We are undertaking environmental impact assessments as required by the Environmental Management Act 20.27.

We will, therefore, be constructing a new landfill (dumpsite) at Waltrail Farm along Empandeni Road, he said.

This project will also involve the establishment of a proper quarry mining operation at the same farm in a move to control the current haphazard manner in which it is being done through an environmental management plan.

Luthe is on record saying council would prioritise quarry mining projects so that the companies involved would in turn supply the local authority when it embarks on construction projects.

He said council would today meet various stakeholders to update them on the new projects.
