Government yesterday upped its preparations for the national population census scheduled for next month with the Central Mechanical Engineering Department (CMED inviting individual motorists and corporate organisations to hire out their vehicles for the programme.
In a notice published in newspapers yesterday, the CMED said motorists would be paid between $60 and $100 per day for use of their cars depending on vehicle type for the duration of the enumeration exercise running from August 17 to 28.
CMED is a quasi-government company that provides transport services to government departments. Most of its vehicles are worn out or need service.
“It is essential that all vehicles selected for the exercise to be comprehensively insured and should be owner-driven during the exercise,” the CMED said.
Finance minister Tendai Biti recently said at least $37 million was required for the census, adding government had so far set aside $22 million.
According to the last national census conducted in 2002, Zimbabwe has an estimated population of 14 million people.

Analysts expect the census figures to either drop due to the heavy brain-drain that hit the country over the last decade or remain stagnant.
