The president of the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta), Tendai Chikowore, has accused parliamentarians of using teachers during elections and dumping them once they get into office.

In a speech read on her behalf by John Mlilo, a Zimta official based in Bulawayo during commemorations of World Teachers’ Day at Coghlan Primary School, Chikowore blamed parliamentarians for ignoring teachers’ plight.
“Even those who ascend to the parliamentary throne soon forget the trials and tribulations of Zimbabwean educators as soon as they taste the comfort of parliamentary seats,” she said.
“Educators, like the rest of the civil servants, demanded that the House of Assembly puts on its agenda the remuneration of its workforce, but no positive response has been noted.”
Chikowore said this year’s commemorations running under the theme Take a Stand for Teachers resonated well with Zimta’s current efforts of representing and lobbying for improved conditions and better salaries for teachers.
