Town clerk Daniel Matawu told NewsDay yesterday the solar-powered traffic lights would be installed at 16 traffic intersections in the Midlands capital.

“The trend the world over is to have solar-powered traffic lights and as a city we have been lagging behind. We have, therefore, begun the process of inviting tender bids for the supply and installation of solar-powered traffic lights,” Matawu said.

Matawu said the move was expected to decongest the city and prevent accidents due to non-functional traffic lights particularly during power outages.

He said once the tender process was through, they would then engage the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority for additional funding .
