CHEGUTU — The municipality has shut down illegal food outlets in the town following reported cases of typhoid, council confirmed yesterday.

Chegutu council’s director of central administration, Jacob Chikuruwo, confirmed the closure of unlicensed restaurants saying the move was one of preventative measures taken to curtail the spread of typhoid.
“Chegutu recently observed suspected cases of typhoid which were reported. Resultantly, we took water samples for testing and our water was found safe for drinking and we are happy that our health officials, working with other partners, managed to contain the spread of typhoid,” said Chikuruwo.
Chikuruwo said his council required $7,3 million to rehabilitate water and sewerage networks to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in future.
Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo recently toured Chegutu to assess the situation on the ground following reported cases of typhoid in the town.
