THE Bulawayo City Council is owed over $80 million by consumers, with domestic debtors accounting for the bulk of the debt. Report by Fortune Moyo Staff Reporter
Domestic customers owe the local authority over $50 million. Council said the debt was seriously affecting its service delivery.
According to the latest council minutes, councillors were concerned about the ballooning amount of money owed to council.
“The amount owed to the local authority has increased and we have also observed that government debts had increased,” deputy mayor Amen Mpofu said. “In view of this, there is need for the council to be proactive about the situation.”
Domestic debtors owe $51,4 million, industrial and commercial debtors owe $23,8 million and government debts add up to $4,7 million.
“We have noted that the bulk of the debts were in respect of domestic consumers. This is an indication of the harsh economic environment,” council’s finance director Kempton Ndimande said.
