KAROI — POLICE in Mashonaland West have called on the travelling public to desist from hitchhiking, but use public transport in the wake of a rise in robbery cases on unsuspecting commuters at the hands of unknown assailants offering lifts in private cars.

In the latest incident, a 27-year-old Harare man lost $3 550, 100 000 Zambian kwacha, a cellphone and camera to unidentified robbers who had offered him a lift from Chirundu to Harare late last week.
Mashonaland West acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the robbery that occurred near Mashala Farm in Karoi.
Police said on November 22 at around 4pm, Julius Matende from Harare, boarded a private vehicle which had three occupants in Chirundu on his way to Harare.
Upon approaching Chanetsa turnoff in Karoi, the driver headed towards Tengwe before stopping at Mashala Farm where the trio manhandled and robbed him of his cash and goods before fleeing from the scene.

Matende reported the incident to police in Karoi.
